Brain injuries, also known as “the invisible injury,” touches the lives of millions. From a sporting injury resulting in a concussion, a car accident leading to a traumatic brain injury, or a genetic predisposition to strokes, no one is immune to the effects of a brain injury. In this workshop, you will learn about the various types of brain injuries and the ripple effects it has on the lives of survivors and their family. The cognitive, emotional, and physical consequences of brain injury and how they affect the family dynamic as well as individual’s identity will be highlighted.

 Objectives:

1.     Ability to identify various types of injury (traumatic and non-traumatic) and have a better understanding of its causes

2.     Signs, symptoms, and how to effectively screen for a brain injury during clinical work with clients

3.     Improved awareness of common emotional, physical, and cognitive changes faced by brain injury survivors

4.     Ability to identify the stressors of caregiving and knowledge of various strategies, tips, and available resources

5.     Stress management strategies for survivors, caregivers, and professional working with the brain injured population

Bio: Alexandria Theordor, LCSW, CBIS is the owner/therapist at Body and Mind Counseling LLC where she serves as a "gentle interruption to what is not working" by helping her clients get back on track to a life filled with joy and purpose. Alexandria has a demonstrated history of working in the hospital & health care industry assisting clients in learning how to maximize their bodies response to stress. Her most recent work has been in service of helping the chronically ill, and their caregivers, develop a new sense of normalcy, through the use of CBT and ACT interventions. She holds specialized training and experience as a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) and has extensive experience working with survivors of stroke, concussions, and other traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).
