2 Clinical or Social/Cultural CE Credits
Culturally Competent Care of Transgender, Nonbinary, and
Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) Clients for Cisgender Clinicians 101: Transgender –The Basics
“Gender Identity,” “Gender Expression,” and “Sex and Assigned at Birth” are just some of the terms used to describe the transgender community. Terminology and concepts are rapidly evolving, and our practice knowledge must be routinely updated and revised. Social Workers who seek to be current, respectful, and affirming in their use of language and culturally competent in their treatment settings should prioritize learning that pushes the boundaries of outdated knowledge, ideas, and practices in the provision of care.
Recent changes in the conceptualization of transgender identity have been incorporated and codified in the revisions from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 4th Edition Text Revision (DSV-IV-TR) to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th Edition (DSM-V).
Social Workers must be aware of these changes and make the appropriate adjustments in their practice to reflect said changes. Social workers who attend this workshop will be able to:
- (1) identify and challenge personal biases and blind-spots as they relate to the TGNC community
- (2) review the changes in TGNC theory of care from DSM-IV-TR to DSM-V
- (3) learn current, client-centered language that respects the dignity of Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Non-Conforming individuals.
