Effective Strategies for Social Workers to Talk to School Staff About Trauma
Description: During this webinar participants will be instructed by a former school social
worker and former elementary school teacher who became a principal. The webinar will
provide an overview of research on the effects of childhood trauma on the brain and how this
manifests in classroom behavior. Additionally, the webinar will explore ways school social
workers can effectively convey this information to school staff.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify how systems theory can be used to change the
climate of a school by sharing trauma-sensitive strategies with teachers.
2. Participants will understand how childhood trauma creates neurological changes in the
developing brain.
3. Participants will learn four real-world strategies to use when explaining trauma-sensitive
topics to teachers.
Social Work Theories to include: Overarching Strength-Based Framework, System Theory,
Cognitive Theory, Behavior Theory, Problem Solving
