Effective Strategies for Social Workers to Talk to School Staff About Trauma

 

Description: During this webinar participants will be instructed by a former school social

worker and former elementary school teacher who became a principal. The webinar will

provide an overview of research on the effects of childhood trauma on the brain and how this

manifests in classroom behavior. Additionally, the webinar will explore ways school social

workers can effectively convey this information to school staff.

 

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to identify how systems theory can be used to change the

climate of a school by sharing trauma-sensitive strategies with teachers.

2. Participants will understand how childhood trauma creates neurological changes in the

developing brain.

3. Participants will learn four real-world strategies to use when explaining trauma-sensitive

topics to teachers.

 

Social Work Theories to include: Overarching Strength-Based Framework, System Theory,

Cognitive Theory, Behavior Theory, Problem Solving

Lori Madrid, MSW, LCSW , is a licensed clinical social worker and certified trauma professional with over 20 years experience providing therapeutic services in a variety of settings including: working with families who are homeless in Spanish Harlem; providing outpatient therapy to children in the foster care system in the South Bronx; facilitating group, family, individual and equine therapy with children in psychiatric residential treatment and also working within the Title 1 School System. Most recently Lori has founded and is the CEO of Everybody Matters, Inc, a non-profit that trains college-level social work interns to provide free social-emotional support to children in the school system who are unable to access those services elsewhere.

Everybody Matters
Dr. Bennett MacKinney has served the education community for more than twenty years. He is a former teacher, principal and central office administrator. In those roles he served critical roles in bringing restorative justice and equity programs to schools and was recognized as a Rodel Foundation Exemplary in 2016. He has a particular interest in helping schools develop success strategies for students who have experienced trauma. With this in mind, he was a founding member of the Everybody Matters board of directors in 2015. Since that time he has visited educational settings across the country to share highlights and successes of the Everybody Matters program. Dr. MacKinney continues to train new administrators and school leaders at the university and school district level.
