The webinar will briefly describe the relationship of social work and public child welfare historically and in NJ, and focus on local efforts in the state to ensure that children and families receive the services they need during this pandemic.  Participants will learn about progress on continuing efforts to address ongoing challenges, and opportunities for social workers and communities to work together to help NJ residents stay safe, healthy and connected.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of the 2-hour webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the historical and contemporary significance of social work in child welfare practice, particularly as it pertains to New Jersey
  2. Describe efforts by the Division to ensure child safety and family well-being during the pandemic and its progress on major challenges that remain a continuing focus of child welfare work in the state
  3. Articulate opportunities for collaboration in addressing contemporary challenges faced by children, families and communities

Ericka Deglau, PhD, LSW developed and has directed Rutgers School of Social Work’s Intensive Weekend program, an MSW program designed for students employed full time in the human services, since its inception in 2006. When the program initially began, it was directed to NJ’s public child welfare employees, graduating 152, the majority of whom remain in service and many who have attained positions of leadership. The program subsequently began to admit students employed in a broad range of human service capacities, welcoming over 600 MSWs to the profession who were able to obtain graduate social work education without interrupting their careers. Prior to coming to Rutgers, Dr. Deglau worked in the areas of child welfare and HIV/AIDS, primarily in program development. She completed her PhD in Anthropology, with a focus on child welfare reform, at the New School for Social Research, and her MSW, concentrating on community organization and program development, at Hunter School of Social Work, both while working full time.

Nancy Carré-Lee, Deputy Director of Central Operations provides support to the Assistant Commissioner of Child Protection and Permanency in overseeing all aspects of management and operations. In this role, Nancy reviews, collaborates and analyzes child welfare practices in effort to implement and sustain best case practice. She works collaboratively with the DCF sister Divisions within the Department of Children and Families to address any common and complex issues to enhance day to day practice and service delivery. Nancy also works with key leadership within the agency to address trending issues, implement new initiatives and help support policies and procedures. She is responsible for the management of critical incidents and statewide operations such and the CP&P after-hours response system. In Nancy’s role, she also provides supervisory oversight to NJ Child Abuse Hotline Administrator.
