AAUW November 2018 General Meeting

Suicide Prevention

As the recent series in the Idaho Statesman highlighted, suicide is endemic in Idaho and the Mountain West. The Speedy Foundation is attempting to counteract the unfortunate forces that make suicide more common in Idaho. The foundation is named in honor of Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, a three-time Olympic freestyle skier from Boise, who committed suicide at age 29 after suffering from depression. His mother, Linda, began the foundation upon learning that Idaho was the only state without a suicide hotline. The state now has a suicide hotline, but the foundation's work continues.

Our speaker is Shannon Decker, the executive director of the foundation, who is a mental first aid facilitator and trains on behalf of the Speedy Foundation in mental health education and suicide prevention in both Idaho and Utah.

Meal choices are available on the registration form.

Contact Marci Lingo with dietary restrictions.
