Survey of Building Envelope Test Methods (introductory level)
This presentation will provide an overview of the most common building envelope test methods, what they can tell us about the envelope, and when they are most appropriate to use. Case studies will be used to illustrate the different types of tests and lessons learned through testing.
Detailing for Durability, Selected Case Studies (advanced level)
This presentation will use case studies to dig into the factors that must be considered for durability in seemingly simple building envelope assemblies. The case studies include: insulating existing brick, vapor open walls, and mixed insulation systems. We will expose the nuanced and often conflicting factors that come from material choice, site constraints, and constructability. If we are lucky, warm debate will be an outcome of this presentation.
Jon Haehnel – Director of Building Envelope Services, BVH Integrated Services
Jon has been testing and inspecting institutional and commercial buildings for over 18 years. Mr. Haehnel has tested buildings as large as a city block in downtown Manhattan and as small as an 81 square foot automated weather station slated for Antarctica. Jon's expertise is in building envelope testing and design. Most of his work focuses on new and retrofit commercial construction but he also does forensic testing to determine the root cause of high energy costs, mold, ice dams, and pipe freeze-ups. Jon is a certified Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst and Envelope Specialist. Jon is a frequent presenter at the Better Buildings by Design Conference.
