Advanced Silver Techniques: Make your own metal stamps 10/23-11-27, 2017

Monday mornings 9:00 am to noon, 6 weeks.

Steel stamps have been used to create surface to tell stories, create surface interest, and to texture metal jewelry for generations. Native American symbols are seen stamped onto a myriad of jewelry from all over the southwest. The designs of stamps can be significant, abstract and playful, all at once! But finding good quality stamps, and those that suit your design vision, can be expensive and/or difficult.

Learn to make a steel decorative stamp to decorate your work. Students will learn to anneal, carve and heat treat a piece of tool steel to create their own stamp design. This is a great class opportunity for those that appreciate tool making, and the traditional SW tribal designs. 

Students will use torch, files and rotary tools to prepare, carve and temper a tool blank. A discussion about tool steels & tempering will be included.
Students will recieve two steel blanks, and may work on both as class time allows.

Health advisory: This class will require a lot of hand work. If you have grip strength shortcomings, carpal tunnel or other hand health issues, this class project may be difficult for you to complete. Please consider your health prior to registering.

Classes are conducted by volunteer members of the Oxnard Gem & Mineral Society, under the the auspices of the City of Oxnard, Dept. of Recreation.
