Monday mornings 9:00 am to noon, 6 weeks.

Etching is a great way to add surface texture and visual interest to your jewelry or art pieces! In this class students will learn to etch using both chemical and electrical methods. Each class member will purchase a kit, and learn to construct an electrical etching station which they can use at in class. Once they are comfortable with the operation attendees will be able to etch at home with confidence.

Chemical etching will be conducted with class supplies. Discussions about safe practice and solution disposal will be included. Attendees should supply their own copper bronze and/or silver for their desired projects.

A domed pendant element will be our only follow-along project. Students will be allowed to use the rest of their class time to work on their own etching projects.

This class is great for the student that has been thinking about venturing into our advanced class. The projects are easy and can be used to create beautiful personalized work.

Please note, due to the nature of the advanced class discussions there is no time to explain basic concepts. Soldering will not be discussed in this class. Students must have a fluent understanding of basic metalworking and fabrication skills.

Materials recommended for this class: Discs or shapes sawn from 18 - 20 gauge sterling silver, copper or bronze sheet. Etching can be done on any gauge, but thin metals may perforate.

The kit that students will need to purchase will include the supplies to make an etching station and consumables for one project. Students will learn how to source their own consumables for additional projects.

Classes are conducted by volunteer members of the Oxnard Gem & Mineral Society, under the the auspices of the City of Oxnard, Dept. of Recreation.
