On Aug. 3, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) will host the next in its series of community conversations on arts and culture. The ARC Cultural Forums provide opportunities for the arts and culture community to convene to consider pressing national issues, hear from national speakers and consider the local context for these issues.
The upcoming ARC Cultural forum on August 3rd at the Fox Theatre will focus on Cultural Equity and will feature three speakers who have been a regular part of the national conversation on this issue. We will be joined by Roberto Bedoya (People, Land, Arts, Culture and Engagement Initiative), Rebecca Burrell (Portland Community Media) and Brea Heidelberg (Rider University).
We will spend time together hearing about the vocabulary of equity, how these issues affect policy and placemaking, what it means to be an ally in this important work and more.
Speakers:
Roberto Bedoya is a writer and cultural activist. He is the former executive director of the Tucson Pima Arts Council, Tucson, AZ, where he has instituted the innovative P.L.A.C.E. (People, Land, Arts, Culture and Engagement) Initiative, a civic engagement/placemaking platform that supports artist projects that address critical community issues. Throughout his career, he has supported artist-centered cultural practices and advocated for expanded definitions of inclusion and belonging.
Rebecca Burrell is the new Director of Strategy & Development at Portland Community Media, based in Portland, Oregon. She spent the last six years inaugurating community engagement programming for The Right Brain Initiative, and helping Right Brain grow to become a national leader in arts education. She is a member of the Americans for the Arts Emerging Leader Council, which she co-chaired from 2014-15, and the Portland Metro Leadership Council of the Oregon Community Foundation. She is winner of a 2015 Willamette Week Skidmore Prize, awarded to exceptional non-profit leaders under the age of 36.
Brea M. Heidelberg is an Assistant Professor of Arts Administration at Rider University. In each of her undergraduate courses she infuses her lesson plans with a focus on social justice and diversity. In her teaching and research, Brea pays particular attention to the professional development of arts administrators, focusing on the initial stages of early career training and socialization. Brea earned her PhD in Arts Administration, Education & Policy from Ohio State University, where her research focused on arts advocacy arguments at the federal level. Her other research interests include human resources issues, cultural policy at the state and federal levels and cultural diplomacy.
