Description
The Basic Threat Evaluation and Reporting Course (B-TERC) is a one-day training that teaches participants how to identify and report threats or observable behaviors that may concern others, to assist in preventing acts of targeted violence, such as, but not limited to, terrorism, school shootings, or mass attacks in public spaces. Participants are equipped with the tools to identify and report threats or observable behaviors that may concern others, as well as recognize intervention strategies to move individuals off of a pathway to violence.
Participants will:
- Define targeted violence and behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM).
- Explain how a BTAM approach can lead to the prevention of targeted violence.
- Differentiate between BTAM, mental health risk assessment, Nationwide Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR) Initiative (NSI), and criminal investigations.
- Identify the elements and purpose of the pathway to violence model.
- Identify the purpose of each stage of the BTAM Model.
- Identify the characteristics of an effective BTAM team.
- Apply privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties considerations when conducting a BTAM process.
- Identify four types of biases that can impact one¿s perspective on a case.
- Summarize the theoretical framework of BTAM and importance of the value of community involvement in the BTAM process.
- Identify strategies to encourage involvement and reporting of tips and leads.
- Explain the difference between holistic reviews and triage assessments and when each should be utilized.
- Identify the actions to take for processing imminent and long-term threats.
- Using the applicable toolkit, identify the key considerations when processing anonymous threatening communications.
- Apply the appropriate toolkit protocols to triage real-life social media threatening communications.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply the BTAM Model to a real-life incident using the appropriate toolkits.
