ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
If you are a leader oriented toward equity and inclusion, then you must develop the skills of a Warm Demander. Lisa Delpit says that a Warm Demander educator “expects a great deal of their students, convinces them of their own brilliance, and helps them to reach their potential in a disciplined and structured environment."1 Likewise, Warm Demander leaders expect a great deal of their colleagues, have done the work to create a strong vision for equity and justice in their school communities, and have the skills to call others “in” when harm is caused. This introductory virtual workshop on becoming a Warm Demander will help participants at all levels of leadership develop the skill of maintaining high expectations alongside high accountability for adult learners and educators—an important part of maintaining the cultural competency of all the adults in a school building or district. Join us as we provide a framework for Warm Demander leadership, cultivate the racial literacy to see systems of oppression at play, and offer practical guidance to become a Warm Demander for equity.
OUTCOMES
Participants will:
- Engage in a humanizing experience to reflect on their identities, implicit biases and worldviews.
- Feel empowered to engage in courageous conversations that call folks in to the work of equity.
- Build racial literacy in recognizing the intersection of systemic oppression and interpersonal relationships within a school building.
- Practice Warm Demander conversations that orient towards a shared organizational vision and values while building fluency and awareness.
COURSE MATERIALS
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
- Anyone who works with adults in schools and districts can attend: teacher-leaders, department chairs, coaches, administrators, etc.
- Educators of all positions who work with adults in public, charter, and private schools.
- New and experienced coaches, managers, and mentors.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Shane Safir has worked at every level of the education system, from the classroom to the boardroom, for over two decades. In 2003, after teaching in San Francisco and Oakland and organizing with the San Francisco Organizing Project to launch a new school, Safir became the founding principal of June Jordan School for Equity (JJSE), an innovative national model identified by leading scholar Linda Darling-Hammond as having “beaten the odds in supporting the success of low-income students of color.” Since 2008, Safir has provided leadership coaching, strategic planning support, and equity-centered professional learning for schools, districts, and organizations across the country and in Canada. She facilitates sought-after workshops on equity leadership, coaching, and facilitating adult learning among other areas. She writes frequently for Edutopia and ASCD’s Educational Leadership magazine and is the author of The Listening Leader: Creating the Conditions for Equitable School Transformation (Jossey-Bass: 2017). Shane's newest book, Street Data: A Next-Generation Model for Equity, Pedagogy, and School Transformation (Corwin: 2021), is out now.
Jessica Huang is an educator & leader with 20+ years of experience as a classroom teacher, school administrator and leadership coach and facilitator, She has a wide range of knowledge for how to build equitable school communities. Through her on-the-ground work in schools and her support and coaching of educator teams, she creates healing-centered, student-focused spaces where students of all backgrounds can thrive. Jessica has a Bachelor’s of Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Master’s of Education from Stanford University. Her experience in both the public school system in the US and in international schools equips her to lead in a wide-variety of cultural-contexts. Jessica is currently serving as Vice Principal at United World College, Southeast Asia in Singapore.
