Join the faculty of BGSP, students, colleagues and community participants for 4 days of dialogue as we explore the emotions of communication and the communication of emotions.
Tuesday, August 1 Emotional Communication: An Introduction
Session 1a: Exploring Emotional Communication
Jane Snyder, Ph.D., Cert. Psya., will explore the nature and effectiveness of emotional communication in general human interaction and specifically in the analytic session.
Session 1b: Emotional Communication in a Group: Experientially and Theoretically
Faye Newsome, Cert. Psya., will provide a group experience to understand and demonstrate how emotional communication is used in group work.
Evening Event: Wine & Oysters, Dr. Snyder’s House, 5:30-7:30
Objectives
The participants will be able to:
· Define the meaning of emotional communication, especially as it is used in a clinical setting.
· Explore the use of emotional communication as it is used in clinical group work.
· Apply the method of emotional communication to their own clinical work and assess its effectiveness.
Wednesday, August 2 Emotional Communication in the Field
Session 2a: A Case Presentation
Susan Benson, Psya.D., will present on the use of emotional communication in specific case material. Mary Shepherd, Psya.D., will facilitate group discussion.
Session 2b: On Dementia
Eugene Goldwater, M.D., Cert. Psya., will facilitate a panel discussion on emotional communication in the post-verbal world of dementia. Panelists: Joyce Smith, MSW, Christina Healy, RN, CAS, Cert. Psya., and Marjorie Goodwin, PMHCNS, Psya.D.
Evening Event: Student Association Barbecue
Objectives
The participant will be able to:
· Discuss the presenter’s difficulties in proving a success emotional communication to the patient, how she overcame this difficulty, and the effect it had on the case outcome.
· Explore emotional communication, especially as it applies to work with patients with dementia.
· Explore and discuss how the concept of emotional communication can make a difference when used within the family context with parents with dementia.
Thursday, August 3 Emotional Communication in the Classroom
Session 3a: Emotional Communication with Children
Vanessa Cid, M.Ed., will present the importance of emotional communication in the pre-school classroom setting. Virginia Elliott, Cert. Psya., will facilitate group discussion.
Session 3b: The Modern Psychoanalytic Classroom
Elizabeth Dorsey, Cert. Psya., and Jane Stoleroff, MA., will discuss emotional education and the impact of emotional communication in the psychoanalytic classroom.
Evening Event Bonfire on the Beach
Objectives
The participant will be able to:
· Describe the use of emotional communication as it pertains specifically to pre-school children in a classroom setting.
· Describe what is meant by an “emotional education” in a modern psychoanalytic classroom for training analytic candidates.
· Describe how this type of training can be applied to other classroom settings, for example, in public schools at other levels.
Friday, August 4 Emotional Communication in the Family
Session 4a: Using Analytic Skills with Family
Lorette Dussault, Psya.D., and her daughter Jessica Richards will share their experiences of the impact of emotional communication on adoption, attachment, and family dynamics.
Session 4b: Closure
Lynn Perlman, Ph.D., Cert. Psya., will facilitate a group discussion exploring the experience throughout the week.
Objectives
The participant will be able to:
· Describe the impact of types of emotional communication on family dynamics as they relate to the experience of adoption and attachment.
· Discuss the underlying theoretical concepts as to the effectiveness of emotional communication: when it is indicated, and when it may fail or succeed.
· Describe the experience of termination as it applies to emotional communication in the clinical setting and relationships.
Fee: $35.00 per day. $120.00 for the week
3 CE Credits/Clock Hours per day
