Nethercote Hall, Nethercote Rd, Nethercote, NSW, 2549, Australia.

Learn the old and nearly forgotten craft of carving a stringed marionette puppet straight from a small branch. You'll discover how every tree has hidden in it a whole family of puppets, and how to use a range of slow carving techniques to find your very own timeless companion.

You'll learn to design and carve a small marionette stringed puppet using just a whittling knife and a small axe. Learn how to safely carve different expressions on a face, how to articulate different parts of the body and how to make your happy little creation spring to life!

There are only a handful of people making puppets this way throughout the world, so join professional wood carver and puppet maker, Jeff Donne to learn the pleasures of carving at an unhurried pace and how to carve a puppet just like Geppetto did!

Absolutely no experience needed, for ages 16+. All tools to use and materials provided.

Enjoy a day of happy slowness :)

Important information about cancellations and liability

We understand that sometimes things happen and you can't make it to a workshop that you've booked, so we have a cancellation policy to help you decide on what to do should you be unable to make the workshop.

Tickets for all Spoonsmith workshops, including puppet carving workshops and excluding Spoon Jam pre-fest workshops, are non-refundable within four weeks of the workshop you have booked.

If you are aware you will be unable to attend, you may pass your ticket to someone else you wish to come in your place. If there is a waiting list at the time of your cancellation we will pass this onto you to enable the transfer of your ticket. Organising the ticket transfer is the responsibility of the person cancelling their booking.

In the event that you do not turn up a pre-fest workshop, the ticket is non-transferable to another person or date after the event. By booking a ticket to any Spoonsmith workshop, you agree to all of the above.

Liability notice

Whilst arriving, attending and leaving any Spoonsmith workshop, it is your responsibility to ensure that you maintain and adhere to all safety precautions and requirements.

The owners of Spoonsmith, our volunteers and the attending creatives hold no personal liability or responsibility for any damage, loss or theft incurred to personal property, or any physical injuries obtained during the workshop. By attending a workshop, you agree in holding full responsibility and liability for any damages and injuries to personal property and/or parties involved that may occur.

Jeff Donne is one of Australia's best known puppet makers and spoon carvers. His roving woodcraft school has travelled across much of Australia, bringing traditional woodcraft skills to the big smoke and on to Tasmania, Alice Springs and many regional areas sprinkled throughout the land. With more than 20 years experience as a green woodworker, carver and puppet maker, Jeff teaches in a relaxed manner, helping students to enjoy and explore the many craftable things hidden in trees.
