The films of director Alfred Hitchcock have long fascinated psychoanalysts as well as the general public-- and none more than his 1958 masterpiece Vertigo. Part film noir, part detective thriller, and above all a psychological study of obsession, Vertigo contains not only Hitchcock’s most revolutionary cinematography but also a wonderfully complex hero who viewers will want to put on the couch.
Continuing Education Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Analyze Hitchcock’s cinematic imagery as the symbolic language of his protagonist’s psychic state.
- Discuss how Vertigo depicts the nature of obsession.
- Discuss the detective-hero who confronts (and represses) his fears of love and death.

Presenter:
Emily Fox- Kales, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, is Clinical Instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She also teaches cinema studies at Northeastern University and the Graduate Consortium of Women’s Studies and was Film Editor of Gender & Psychoanalysis. She is the author of Body Shots: Hollywood and the Culture of Eating Disorders (SUNY Press, 20ll).
