Teacher Introduction:
My name is Kawther Mohammed, and thank you for trusting me with your most prized gifts--your children. I earned my BS in English Linguistics at EMU and an Associate's Degree in Journalism at WCC. I worked for many years at WCC's Writing Center and currently work for Kalamazoo Public Schools. I am eager to use my experiences over the years to guide your students in the art of writing. I look forward to meeting your students.
Jazakallahu kheiran
Workshop Goals:
Week 1 Goal: (First half) To begin with ourselves--we will learn about narratives. Students will write a short narrative piece using their favorite form of medium--poetry, song, short essay, satire. (Second half) We will then look at different types of writing--poetry, short story, prose.
Week 2 Goal: (First half) To explore the differences between active and passive voice and how they influence the power of writing. (Second half) We will also discuss seldomly used forms of punctuation that can bring life to writing: the dash, the semicolon, line breaks, italics, etc.
Week 3 Goal: (First half) Extracting daily life experiences to form written art. Taking a look at our culture, gender, struggles, etc and forming work around it. (Second half) Incorporating Islam into our writing in a way that will entice readers. Utilizing words from the Quran and forming work around it.
Keeping track of our writing in a Google Doc shared with teacher. Will provide feedback. Final products will be turned in as a portfolio in PowerPoint presentation (this is still in the works).
