Still Life Speed Drawing - Fast and Slow!

With Marie-Louise Plum

Join artist Marie-Louise Plum for a series of fun still life drawing exercises (also applicable to painting, if you prefer!). Create your own still life arrangement (from whatever you have in your home) and be guided through a range of still life techniques from 30 seconds to ten minutes per exercise - for example, using your non-dominant hand, impressionist techniques, line drawing etc.

Marie-Louise Plum b.1981 is a contemporary British artist navigating themes of 'Pastoral Occultism' and 'Uncanny Enchantments'. Her illustrations focus on the dark side of children's tales and folklore, whilst her paintings take their influence from a sense of self, place and social history. From 2010 - 2020 Marie ran a mental health and art project, called Mental Spaghetti, which focused on running art workshops for well being.

Materials:

  • Paper, card or any material you wish to draw/paint on - cardboard, newspaper, tissue paper etc.

  • Whatever you feel comfortable drawing or painting with - pen, pencil, paintbrush, chalks, charcoal, pastels etc.

  • A number of items that you can arrange to make a still life composition - fruit, ornaments, household items, etc. Bear in mind that smaller items might be better, and larger objects will most likely be posed further away from you. We will pose the items during the workshop.

  • Light sources - if you have a lamp or can prop a phone up and use the phone light, that would be great. If not, it isn't essential.
