There are two exciting deep dives to choose from:

Micro School for MACRO Change: Transforming your school from within

Kyle Wagner, Transform Educational Consulting Limited/ Former Futures Academy Founder and Houming Jiang, Middle School Principal and Former Futures Academy Co-Founder

Many large schools are prevented from deeper learning experiences by clunky, outdated systems including fixed schedules, subject-specific classes, standardized assessment, and isolated classrooms. What if there was a way to work outside these systems and accelerate innovation on our campuses right away? There is. Through nimble 'micro hubs'/ or 'schools within a school,' we can accelerate innovation and advance deeper learning practices on our campuses. This highly interactive session will take participants through a simple design process to create micro- hubs within their schools to accelerate deeper learning experiences. Using highly inspiring case studies of micro-schools, participants will learn the advantage of micro schools in advancing equity, fostering community connections, and developing deeper learning practices. With these case studies as a 'spark for ideas,' participants will frame a question to facilitate the design of their own 'micro-school';' define specifically which students it will serve; ideate the kind of learning experiences it will foster; and rapidly construct a prototype to exhibit and share with other participants in a showcase of learning. It is strongly encouraged to sign up in school design teams of 3-5 people with at least 1 student stakeholder, as this session will be highly participatory with multiple stakeholders.

Designed to Thrive: Creating High Quality Performance Assessments That Enable Marginalized Learners to Thrive

Alcine Mumby, Envision Learning Partners and Abby Bendetto, Core Shifts

Participants will explore the different features of high-quality performance assessment (HQPA) and design a prototype of a performance assessment experience that provides evidence of student learning/thinking in essential competencies. The series concludes with participants iterating on that prototype after centering the lived experience of a marginalized student your system may serve and reflecting on the changes needed to ensure that ALL students thrive in their performance assessment system.
