Students are asked to think of the notion “DRESS CODE” in time and space. They are encouraged to reflect on the here and now, pick up one issue they consider most important, express themselves and deliver a 50x50 cm design that could work both autonomously and as part of a communal patchwork. Final works should combine bold typography and visuals. The patchwork; a new code, a contemporary fabric illustrating personal comments on the theme, should work on public display.
Topic of this year’s social design course is Fashion is my ism. The average consumer bought 60 percent more clothes in 2014 than in 2000, but kept each garment for half as long. During the workshop students will apply design proposals as digital platform, printed media or interactive media. Students will research, work in teams and create design concepts that will lead to design proposals. You will improve design skills, understanding how a society functions and critical thinking. Aim of the workshop is to create concepts how to reduce overconsumption in fashion business, what we should do with clothes that nobody wants or need and how to reuse clothes.
Workshop task is to design a costume possible to wear it created from recycled materials. Costume is a medium to spread your critical message and awareness about consumption, exploitation of workers, overproduction in fashion industry related to our culture and climate disaster. Your fashion creation should spread critical message and show problems in a new light. Costume design can be created with typography or photography as well.
The workshop's goal is to make students aware of the problems of consumerism and the ways of countering it on the example of fashion and fashion choices they make every day. Working with second-hand garments, their own clothing, damaged fabrics, etc., the students will create an outfit responding to a particular issue caused by the fashion industry and consumers' habits in the contemporary world. The outfit will be catwalk-ready and accompanied by a fashion magazine cover and spread, explaining the concept behind its creation.
