From Cultural Competence to Cultural Humility: Identifying Key Skills in Addressing Racial Bias in Child Welfare Practice (including BaFa BaFa': A Cross Cultural Simulation session)

Morning (From Cultural Competence to Cultural Humility:  Identifying Key Skills in Addressing Racial Bias in Child Welfare Practice

The first half of this workshop review definitions of cultural competence. The concepts include intersectionality, Implicit Bias, and Cultural Humility. The second half of the training is interactive and focuses on identifying and developing key skills for culturally humble practice with children and families. This part of the workshop may also include activities that identify internal and external resources (and constraints) that support the development and implementation of these skills within a Racial Justice framework. Training Objectives: 1. Participants will become familiar with definitions of cultural competence and a number of related concepts, such as intersectionality, Implicit Bias and Cultural Humility. 2. Participants will become familiar with practice principals and skills for culturally humble child welfare practice. 3. Participants will apply these concepts and skills to cases and identify their strengths and areas for continued development.

Afternoon BaFa’ Bafa’: A Cross Cultural Simulation

 In this simulation, participants are assigned to two artificial cultures. Each group is introduced to a different set of cultural values and allowed to practice these values and subsequently engage the other culture. This simulation is designed to foster cross-cultural awareness through experiencing the development and impact of stereotypes.  Participants come to appreciate the negative impact of stereotypes and of the need to foster greater tolerance and understanding of others in all spheres of life.
