Join Molly Ness for a great presentation!

In recent conversations about the science of reading, there has been significant focus on the role of background knowledge. But equally important are students’ funds of knowledge. This presentation focuses on the definition of funds of knowledge and how they impact comprehension. The presentation aims to do the following:

  • Define funds of knowledge as an asset-based approach and their research basis

  • Highlight the similarities and differences between funds of knowledge and background knowledge

  • Walk through text examples showing how funds of knowledge impact comprehension

  • Provide ways to teachers to evaluate texts for funds of knowledge
