Gonzaga Fall Semester 2017
Monday, September 18 - Friday, September 22, 2017
Retreat Description:
ORGL 522 (Leadership and Community) is offered every Fall and Spring to graduate students in the Organizational Leadership and Communication and Leadership Studies programs. The online-based includes one-week stay at St. Andrew's Abbey (www.saintandrewsabbey.com), located in Valyermo, California, in the upper Mojave Desert, about an hour's drive from Burbank. The first half of the online learning prepares students for their participation in the community life of the twenty monks at St. Andrew's, and the second half of the online learning uses monastic life as a metaphor for experiences in all organizational communities. The course concludes in a paper written by each student that applies his or her learning to the very practical (and non-monastic) realities of organizational life.
In order to register for the course, students need to first make arrangements to stay in one of seventeen available guest rooms at Saint Andrew's Abbey. *There are 2 twin beds in each room*
Arrangements may be made by:
Once students make arrangements to stay at the monastery Guest House, University staff will register them into ORGL 522 on Zagweb. Transportation to the monastery in Southern California is the responsibility of the student, although Dr. John Horsman (horsman@gonzaga.edu) and/or Dr. Michael Carey (carey@gonzaga.edu) will pick up anyone who arrives at Burbank Airport between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the Monday that beings the week of the monastic experience.
