This is a 2 day virtual event held on September 25th & 26th from 9:00am - 12:30pm (PST). In this introductory course, you will learn how to use continuous improvement tools effectively to enhance your equity work. Over the two days, you will work to understand the root causes of an issue, develop a theory of action and identify a strong change idea. You will walk away with an understanding of how continuous improvement processes can support your team in reaching its equity goals, and a bank of tools for engaging in continuous improvement with your team.
Pre-work for Attendees
1. Invite a colleague (estimated time < 1 min)
We highly encourage you to attend this workshop with at least one colleague. Invite a partner teacher, a friend from work, a colleague with whom you collaborate closely–anyone who can collaborate with you on an area you both want to improve.
2. Craft a Team Problem Statement (estimated time: 20 min)
Teams get the most out of this workshop when they come with a focus and a clear problem statement. This may be a problem or equity issue that surfaced from your school’s data, your conversations with students and stakeholders, or your own experience and observations. This video and this document provide guidance on how to craft a problem statement to work with throughout the workshop. Remember, it doesn’t need to be perfect – just good enough to get learning!
3. Listen, Read & Reflect (estimate time: 75-85 min)
Check out these two resources as some helpful background on continuous improvement. Come ready to share ideas that struck you, challenged you and made you go “hmmmm”:
Improvement as a tool for our collective liberation, with Dr. Brandi Hinnant-Crawford. In this important conversation, Stacey Caillier talks to Dr. Brandi Hinnant-Crawford about what Improvement Science looks like when equity and liberation are embedded in the PROCESS, not just the hoped-for result. (estimated time: 55 min)
Improvement as a Journey. In this article, Amanda Meyer describes the process of using improvement from start to finish, drawing on concrete examples from schools she has coached along the way. It’s a great read for getting oriented to the process. (estimated time: 20-30 min)
We look forward to seeing you! In the meantime, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.
