Across-wind forces govern tall building design occasionally. These forces can be exorbitantly high compared to along-wind forces which is a worry for structural designers. Across-wind phenomenon fundamentals are described in this talk, followed by preliminary calculation of across-wind load using AS/NZS 1170.2:2021 with an example covering wind tunnel testing, across-wind spectra, and mitigation measures. Considering the complexity of the phenomenon and its dependence on many parameters, the industry relies on wind tunnel testing to identify the true across-wind load on any building. Across-wind loading is very sensitive to the geometry of the building and its surroundings, and hence wind tunnel testing is the only option to conclude the impact. In case of significant impact, sometimes the building design as originally envisioned may not be feasible without reducing across-wind impact. Geometric modification, structural tuning, and supplementary damping systems are usually relied upon to mitigate this impact. These topics are also briefly covered in this talk.
