Math is Mental: Strategies for Meeting CCRS Standards
This session is geared toward changing the negative stigma that many students and teachers have toward the subject of mathematics. It is designed to move our thinking from learning “THE” way to solve a problem to finding “A” way to solve the problem. The session centers on a classroom that pushes conceptualization over memorization. The ultimate goal is to build skills and confidence that will encourage scholars and teachers to persevere in problem solving.

“It Takes a Village”- Parent and Community Engagement Strategies for Success
This session will focus on asking educators and administrators the question, “What do you REALLY want to see?” as they seek a more fruitful and productive relationship between the school, the parents, and the community. It is the presenter’s intention to introduce to some, and shift the mentality of others, the importance of “GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE” in our interactions with the educational stakeholders we encounter. Additionally, we will discuss the notable difference(s) between parental involvement and parental engagement. Lastly, we will collectively brainstorm more effective and intentional ways for educators and the school itself to “sell” its positive virtues. This will inevitably attract parents and local/national business entities to join with and support the vision.

Cultural Competence and Diversity Education: It Begins with You!
This “Active Participant” workshop will include a brief introduction to the topic of Cultural Responsiveness. We all carry pre-judgements of others; it is human nature. Learning to identify our cultural “blind spots” in order to truly see students and others (from a community different from our culture of origin) is the first step. The session facilitator will lead participants through a series of activities that gradually lead to the experience of a personal shift in our own Cultural Responsiveness. These activities can be used in certain classroom settings to expand students’ ability to better respond to our growing diverse world.

The School to Prison Pipeline: Interrupting the Cycle
The United States of America is the internationalleader in many areas; however, we fall short when it comes to education, why? Capitalism rears its ugly head and education becomes a business. Many students are unaware of their fate as the school bus becomes a prison bus in order punish them for their “failures.” This happens too often in every state across the United States. So, how do we help? What exactly is the issue? Is our education system flawed? Are our students failing? Are we failing our students? Together we will identify some key problems and provide plausible and executable strategies to help our students, cities, states, and our country to “interrupt the cycle.”
