Leadership & the Rule of Benedict: The Monastic Heart
“Monasticism is the single-hearted search for what matters in life. Any life. Every life” (Chittister, Joan. The Monastic Heart, p. xv. The Crown Publishing Group)
Over the last eighteen years, Gonzaga students and alumni have journeyed to St. Andrew’s Abbey in the upper Mojave Desert of California, spending time living in community there with each other and with the monks of Valyermo. In this retreat for Gonzaga alumni, we will use Sr. Joan Chittister’s recent book The Monastic Heart to reflect together on why and how our connection to Valyermo has been both relevant and helpful to us in our professional and personal lives. Building on Chittister’s reflections in her book, we’ll share what is most important to us about our experience at Valyermo and how this has helped us to make sense of our lives, and how we are spreading our experiences from the Abbey out in our community/friends/family groups.
