This training will explore the process of Grief in the lives of young children, focusing on birth-5.  Grief will be defined as it relates to young children and how it may affect typical child development.  Grief will be defined as the intense sadness, confusion and sorrow that accompany the death of a loved one.  This training will also provide social worker's with the tools to know when to make a referral for a child on their case load, and what type of referrals to make.  Social workers will also learn about the common developmental emotional reactions how to respond appropriately to them.  Social workers will be prepared to discuss the effects of the trauma of the loss on young children with biological, foster and adoptive families, and provide them with some tips and strategies to support these children in their homes.  This training will also explore what children need during this time and ways that parents/caregivers can support them.

 

 

 

Course Objective:

 

At the close of this training participants will be able to:

 

·         Defining Grief as related to the death of a loved one, and its effect on young children’s development

 

·         Identifying young children’s responses to the death and what to be aware of.

 

·         Recognizing symptoms and behaviors and their role in young children’s reactions to the death.

 

·         Identifying developmentally appropriate strategies to help support young children during the grief process.

 

·         Identify strategies for parents/caregivers to help support and guide them during the grief process.

Identify supports and resources available to biological, foster and adoptive families with children who have experienced a loss and be able to provide them with facts, tips, and strategies to support young children in this process
