New to a Unit event? NASW-NJ has 12 volunteer-led, county-based Units that hold regional events around the state of New Jersey for members in that area. (However due to the public health emergency, Unit events will be held virtually until further notice!) These events are planned and coordinated by an appointed volunteer Chair and Co-Chair, as well as a Regional Representative from NASW-NJ’s Board of Directors. Medication Management for Depression and Anxiety: What SocialWorkers Need to Know

Dr. Douglas Opler graduated from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study in New York City, where he studied evolutionary anthropology. A change of plans led him away from anthropology to SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, where he earned his medical degree. After graduation, he completed a psychiatry residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. He stayed at Montefiore for an additional year of fellowship training in psychiatric care of the medically-ill. In 2013, Dr. Opler joined the Department of Psychiatry at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School where he teaches and sees patients as an attending psychiatrist on the consultation-liaison psychiatry service of the affiliated University Hospital in Newark. He separately sees patients in his private practice in Ramsey, New Jersey. In 2017, he was a recipient of the Association for Academic Psychiatry's Early Career Development Award. Dr. Opler has published on diverse topics, including somatization, mindfulness, supportive psychotherapy, stimulant use disorder, Andy Warhol's views on psychiatrists, and psychiatric topics in film and other media. He has presented at national professional conferences on diverse topics, including the psychological role of humor. When not working, Dr. Opler enjoys raising his children, playing musical instruments, and painting.
