Robert Whitaker has won numerous awards as a journalist covering medicine and science, including the George Polk Award for Medical Writing and a National Association for Science Writers’ Award for best magazine article. In 1998, he co-wrote a series on psychiatric research for the Boston Globe that was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Anatomy of an Epidemic won the 2010 Investigative Reporters and Editors book award for best investigative journalism.
Peter Breggin M.D. is Founder and Director of the Center for the Study of Empathic Therapy, and a psychiatrist in private practice. Dr. Breggin has been called “the Conscience of Psychiatry” for his efforts to reform the mental health field, including his promotion of caring psychotherapeutic approaches and his opposition to the escalating overuse of psychiatric medications. He is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and former full-time consultant at NIMH and the author of many scientific articles and books including, Toxic Psychiatry and Brain-Disabling Treatments in Psychiatry.
Laura Delano is a psychiatric survivor who writes about her thirteen years of psychiatric indoctrination beginning at the age of fourteen, how she woke up in 2010, and what it's been like to come off psychiatric drugs, leave the "mentally ill" identity behind, and rediscover herself and her connection to the world.
Michael Gilbert Psy.D. has worked in human services for the past 24 years, including foster care, group home, and hospital settings. In addition, he has worked as a school psychologist within Syracuse City Schools as well as adjunct professor at local colleges. In 2000, he founded "It's About Childhood & Family, Inc.," a not-for-profit clinical and resource center. Recently, he launched the Inner Wealth Initiative in Central New York as a grassroots movement to provide families analternative to the traditional mental health system. In addition to lecturing extensively he has advocated for and conducted research evaluating non-medication and non-labeling approaches for families with children exhibiting challenging behaviors often diagnosed as ADHD, ODD, and Bipolar. Dr. Gilbert is on the Board of Directors for the International Society for Ethical Psychology & Psychiatry (ISEPP) as well as the annual conference chairperson.
Sera Davidow devotes much of her time to the Western Massachusetts Recovery Learning Community (www.westernmassrlc.org), which includes Afiya (www.afiyahouse.org), one of about 13 peer respites in the United States. She is also an active part of Hearing Voices USA (www.hearingvoicesusa.org) and a regular blogger on Mad in America (www.madinamerica.com). Sera herself entered the mental health system as a teenager and cites ‘non-compliance’ as a part of what saved her from a very different path through life that surely would not have included the freedom she now enjoys from all psychiatric labels and medications. Sera is also a mother of two wonderful children, a wife, a filmmaker, and an activist.
Rita Cronise is an advanced level WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan™) facilitator. Previously, she was an award-winning freelance instructional designer for more than two decades with Fortune 500 clients like Xerox and Kodak. Recently, Rita developed a training curriculum for peer specialists for the SAMHSA-Funded Recovery to Practice project and she has participated on a committee through the International Association of Peer Supporters (iNAPS) to develop Practice Guidelines for the emerging field of peer support providers.
Jennifer Kinzie is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at Integrative Counseling Services, a Visiting Professor at Cazenovia College and a Survivor of trauma in both childhood and adulthood. Jennifer works and teaches from an empowerment/strengths based approach to social, emotional and behavioral distress. Jennifer is the parent of two beautiful adolescents, and it is her mission to create a more culturally, socially, economically, and politically appreciative “mental health” system that helps people heal and flourish.
