The aim of this session is to give HCSWs a good underpinning knowledge of the common mental health issues of anxiety and depression, serious mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and self-harm.

We explore signs, symptoms and potential causes of the mental health conditions and discuss how they make those living with them feel. Using scenario-based examples, learners will problem solve dealing with sitautions which may indicate a deterioration in a patients mental health and who to report this to. Discussions around having difficult conversations and an awareness of the use of screening tools to monitor a persons current status.

The second part of the session is focused on an understanding of dementia, the types of dementia and the progressive nature of the condition. Learners will be able to become a dementia friend, and work through scenarios to ensure they understand patient centred care.
