The Center for Addiction and Recovery Education at Saint Joseph’s University (CARE@SJU), under a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, will deliver first responder, opioid response, educational training, and refresher training across the Commonwealth. Current and former first responders will train law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS on the topics of substance use disorder and the use of Naloxone (NARCAN) as well as stigma and implicit bias when engaging persons with addiction or substance use disorder issues.

Peer Counselor, First Responder Addiction Treatment (FRAT)

Bryan McCauley is currently a peer counselor with the First Responder Addiction Treatment (FRAT) program at Livengrin Foundation, a drug and alcohol treatment center in Bensalem, PA. Bryan works with police officers, firefighters, and military veterans with substance abuse disorders. He also possesses a personal understanding of substance abuse among first responders since becoming sober in September, 2010. Bryan is a Marine Corps veteran and former police officer / detective who specialized in narcotics investigations while working in the City of Philadelphia and Montgomery County, PA. He is continuing his education, attending Alvernia University in the Addictions and Mental Health program.
