Course Description:
Mindful-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a program originally designed over thirty years ago by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. The course has a basis in eastern psychology and is very applicable to modern secular life. Mindfulness is the practice of sustained focus, self-regulation, self-exploration, and self-liberation with an accepting, open and kind attitude. Common outcomes include:
1. Calmness and expanded awareness
2. Increased brain growth and function in areas of emotional control and executive function
3. Decreased stress
4. Improved self-image, emotional regulation, and concentration
5. Less anxiety

8 Week course: Wednesdays from 6:30-9:00pm September 27 - November 15, 2017
Retreat: Saturday, November 4, 2017, 9:30am - 5:00pm (Location TBD)
Pricing and Scholarships
The course fee is $350.
If you are interested in financial assistance, CCFW offers two options:
- Income-based reduced fee of $275, available to individuals with an annual household income from all sources of $60,000 or less. For more details, please email mindful@uw.edu
- Apply for a scholarship. A limited number of scholarships are available per course. To apply for a scholarship, please review criteria and complete the application form at https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/mindful/237140
Note: Scholarship applicants will be notified no later than 3 weeks prior to the first day of class (9/6/17). Applicants must wait to register for the course until a decision has been made in order to qualify.
If you are a UW Affiliate and have department approval to pay using a UW budget transfer, you may register for a 25% discount ($262.50). Please add your department budget number at check out.
Continuing Education Credits
Pay $5 at registration to receive Certificate of Completion or Clock Hours. See details below:
Certificate of Completion for CEU’s - If you are a licensed psychologist, marriage and family therapist, mental health counselor, or social worker in Washington State you may request a Certificate of Completion for up to 27 credit hours.
Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD) Clock Hours are also available for school teachers. You will be asked to pay a separate fee, $2/per credit hour, by check to PSESD for your completed clock hours.
Please note, the admin fee increases to $20 if credit hours or clock hours are requested AFTER the course begins.
Cancellation Policy
2 weeks or more before first class: 100% minus $5 processing fee
Less than 2 weeks before first class: 50% minus $5 processing fee
After class begins: Refunds will not be given after the class begins.
Pay it Forward - Support the Scholarship Fund
If you are able to pay more for the course, we encourage you to consider donating to the Mindfulness Outreach Fund which allows CCFW to offer 50% and 100% scholarships to community members to aid in the cost of registration fees for mindfulness courses. Scholarships are awarded to increase accessibility of mindfulness and compassion training for individuals who have limited resources to obtain such training and to those who work in communities experiencing adversity. About the Instructor
Richard (Rick) E. Berger, MD, Professor Emeritus in the Medical School at the University of Washington, is the primary teacher of Mindfulness NW. He received his undergraduate education and medical degree from The University of Chicago. He received his certification in the teaching of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness and received a Certification in Mindfulness Facilitation from the Mindful Awareness Research Center at the University of California in Los Angeles. Rick has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPS) classes at the University of Washington Hospital, the University of Washington Intramural Activities Center and the Center for Child and Family Well-being. He also holds certificates to teach mindfulness to children and adolescents from Inner Kids and Mindful Schools and teaches mindfulness in the Seattle Public Schools. His ongoing practice includes daily meditation, yoga, silent retreats and continuing education in mindfulness and related areas.
