2024-2025 Frostbite Season  ***READ ME ***

If you’re not sure if/when you’re ready to join, subscribe to Frostbite Groups.io for community announcements!
You also can ask us about observing a practice (MNRD practices are closed to the public).

Required Equipment

Read up first on gear recommendations in our Skater Handbook!

Participants **MUST** have signed waivers and obtain all required gear to wear while rollerskating in our venue, no exceptions:
- Roller skates (no blades / in-lines)
- Dual-certified helmet (see our helmet guidelines)
- Thick foam-cushioned knee pads with hard shells (skaters will fall on these a lot regardless of skill level)
- Elbow pads with hard shell
- Wrist guards
- Fitted & molded mouthguard

We have a modest equipment library for active participants to borrow gear short-term or if the purchase cost is a burden.
- Since we don't always have all gear and sizes available, ask about this in advance.
- The library's purpose is NOT a backup for forgetting one's own gear at home.

Additionally, for each practice, remember to bring:
- Non-glass, sealable water bottle - please label with participant's name!
- Clothing that allows full range of athletic movement
- No dangly/hoop jewelry or other potential safety hazards
- Athletic shoes (for practices and games)

Practice Details

A PARENT / LEGAL GUARDIAN NEEDS TO ATTEND FOR THEIR SKATER'S FIRST PRACTICE OF THE SESSION.
For Winter Session, the first practice is Sunday, January 19th, 2:00-3:45pm, in the Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
What to expect at that first practice:
- Introductions
- Review practice expectations & code of conduct
- Confirm registration materials completed
- Check for appropriate gear & all safety equipment
- Address any questions

Practices are typically held in the Roy Wilkins Auditorium, RiverCentre Exhibit Halls, or RiverCentre Meeting Rooms located in downtown St Paul (175 Kellogg Blvd, St Paul, MN 55102). If we don't have space on a regular practice day, we may make alternate plans, though not guaranteed.

Schedules are emailed monthly and added to the Groups.io calendar. Last-minute reminders and updates may be sent via Slack. Practice dates may be further subject to change due to weather, space availability, etc.

Generally, social events -- in lieu of Frostbite practices/clinics -- are planned for Sundays after MNRD adult bouts, during a session in progress.
Post-bout Sundays in 2024-2025: Nov 10th, Dec 15th, Jan 12th, Feb 9th, March 30th, April 27th.

Skill Levels and Placement

FrostyTots (ages 7-9)
Basic Skills & Learn About Derby

Ages 10+
Level 1: Basic Skills for Non-Contact Derby *those new to skating/derby are with this group, but may not yet be deemed safe to play non-contact derby.

Level 2: Intermediate Skills for Light Contact Derby
Level 3: Advanced Skills for Full Contact Derby

NOTE: Skaters do not self-select their skill level, nor do they automatically progress at the end of a session or season. There will be periodic assessments for skill group placement / progression, or at coaches' discretion aligned with JRDA Skill Level Assessments. Everyone starts at a different place, and learns at a different pace! Coaches support the skaters and help celebrate successes along their journey.

Attendance Expectations

It is not required to attend all days to participate; however, we ask that you notify us if a registered skater will miss more than 2 or 3 consecutive practices.

For competitive travel team skaters, we expect at least 50% practice attendance. This is important for building team cohesion, skills proficiency, and safety for create the most fun, rewarding team sport experience for everyone!

Costs

If participation costs present a barrier/hardship, MNRD will work with families to help make these great experiences accessible to everyone. You may request a fees accommodation request when filling out the Skater Information Form or by emailing frostbite@mnrollerderby.com, and choose the corresponding "ticket type" below.

Additional costs for uniforms, travel, etc. may apply. MNRD is volunteer-run and skater owned and operated. We all contribute resources and energy to make this awesome sport happen!

Frostboosters, the newly formed 501(c)3 booster club helps defray costs of gear, uniforms, travel, etc., and contributes to strengthening Minnesota Frostbite. And they need family members' involvement to make cool stuff happen!

We are SO VERY excited to have you skate with us! Please direct any questions to frostbite@mnrollerderby.com. Thank you!
