Data science has evolved from an academic research interest into a core component of many industries and an attractive career choice.  Join Muppies NYC for an evening of discussion and networking as we explore skill sets, career paths, trends and challenges in the exciting data science space. We will hear from accomplished members and practitioners of the data science scene in NYC who will share their insights into recent developments in their respective industries and ways to break into the field.

  • Hamed Firouzi, Alphabist, Founder

Hamed is the founder of Alphabist which specializes in algorithmic trading of digital currencies. Formerly he was a senior data scientist at Goldman Sachs. He has a PhD in Electrical engineering and MS in Financial engineering & Applied mathematics from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and a BS degree from Sharif University of Technology.

  • Haseeb Durani, DataRobot, Data Scientist

Haseeb is a machine learning specialist at DataRobot, known for its automated machine learning platform.  Prior to joining DataRobot, he was a data scientist at Cambridge Analytica.  He has MS in biomedical engineering from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and BS in biology from Saint John's University.

  • Michele Whitney, Girl Scouts USA, Chief Data Executive

Michele leads the establishment of the Enterprise Data & Reporting Group at Girl Scouts of the USA, the preeminent leadership development organization for girls.  She provides vision and strategy for global data management, overseeing its quality, structure, storage, movement, governance, reporting and interpretation across the enterprise.  She has been with Girl Scouts since 2013.  She graduated from Smith College with BA in Psychology, Classics and Film.

  • Umar Syed, Google, Research Scientist

Umar is a research scientist at Google AI. Since joining Google in 2011, he has applied machine learning to problems in online advertising, mobile device battery optimization and cloud computing. Before joining Google, Umar received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University, and spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania.
