Our NERC CIP programs are designed for industry professionals seeking a full knowledge of the NERC CIP standards and associated compliance oversight processes. We have several courses available that can be taken individually, or as part of a formal credential program or informal course bundle.

CIP Foundations (included in the C3P and C2T programs)

CIP Deep Dive (Mon-Wed)

This course begins with foundational knowledge of the CIP standards, concepts, and terminology, including a full review of the low impact requirements. Next the course dives deep into standards CIP-004 through CIP-014, covering every requirement in depth with discussions on compliance approaches.

Technical Foundations (Thu)

This course provides conceptual understanding of technical topics relevant to the CIP standards. Course topics will be presented at a conceptual level, with deeper technical dives and specific details being used to support conceptual understanding. The course is not intended to establish technical proficiency for practitioners in specific areas, but it should provide sufficient knowledge of the related concepts to support security and compliance oversight activities.

Industry Fundamentals (Fri)

This course is intended to provide background information on industry operations to enable a better understanding of the context and relevance of CIP standards. The target audience is compliance professionals who lack background in some or all areas of utility operations.

CIP Advanced (included in the C3P program)

Internal Controls (Mon-Tue)

This course will provide an understanding of security control frameworks and the application of internal controls in NERC CIP environments. It will cover the NIST SP800 series controls, NIST CSF, ES-C2M2, and related mappings to the standards. NERC and regional approaches will be reviewed and the controls required by or useful for compliance with the CIP standards will extensively discussed. 

Supply Chain (Wed)

This course will provide an understanding of supply chain security risks relevant in the electric sector and mitigation strategies. The CIP supply chain standards will be covered in detail as well as Presidential Executive Orders, NERC Supply Chain Risk Mitigation Program documents and more.

Audit Prep+ (Thu-Fri) 
The NERC CIP Audit Preparation course provides entity personnel with an understanding of compliance oversight practices employed by the ERO. This includes a detailed explanation of the audit process from preparation, to execution, to post-audit negotiations. Attendees will obtain an understanding of the NERC Rules of Procedures (RoP), Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Program (CMEP), Inherent Risk Assessments (IRA), Internal Controls Evaluation (ICE), and the audit process as documented in the ERO Auditors Handbook. RSAW and evidence preparation and presentation will also be discussed.

CPE Credit

Certificates of completion will be provided after the class as documentation for Continuing Professional Education credit. A full week of CIP courses typically counts for 40 CPE hours and such will be reflected on the course certificate. Attendees should consult the CPE/CEU standards for their specific certifications or credentials to determine whether this course qualifies. EnergySec is unable to submit CPEs on behalf of attendees.
