Join Sports Illustrated Photographer Peter Read Miller and friends on September 14-18, 2016 for 5 days of shooting action at a variety of games and learning in Knoxville TN.

 

The workshop begins on Wednesday evening, September 14 with a cruise past Nyland Stadium down the beautiful Tennessee river. We will enjoy a group barbeque dinner and Peter will lecture and show his work from his 40-year career in sports photography.

 

On Thursday and Friday the class will have an opportunity to shoot a selection of University of TN Varsity sports and a high school football game.  Last year’s class shot swimming, soccer and volleyball.  Both days will also include lectures, demonstrations and critiques of your work. 

 

On Saturday, the class will shoot from the sidelines at the UT vs. Ohio University football game. The energy you will feel of a major college football game inside the historic 102,455 seat Nyland Stadium is beyond words.

 

Sunday morning will conclude with final critiques and the return of your loaner gear.  Class will end at noon on Sunday the 18th.

 

This year’s guest lecturers and instructors will include:

 

 

Steve Fine: New York based, current Photo Editor at Flipbook & former 17-year Director of Photography at Sports Illustrated.  Steve will talk about his years at SI and his current work at Flipboard.  In addition, Steve will critique student portfolios.

 

Patrick Murphy-Racey: Knoxville, TN based photographer and videographer. Pat has shot over 600 assignments for SI, as well as for ESPN The Magazine.  Patrick will demonstrate lighting techniques with the latest gear from Dynalite.

 

Donald Page: Assistant director of Digital Media and Photographer for University of TN Athletics.  Donald will talk about the challenges and rewards of working as a photographer for a D1 college athletic program.

 

During the workshop, you will have access to the latest cameras and lenses from Canon as well as lighting gear from Dynalite. We will also have a pool of gear for setting up remotes and triggering options.

 

What you will learn:

   Techniques to capture action 

   How to use lighting and different angles for shooting various sports 

   The power of cropping & editing images to make them magazine cover worthy

   How to choose the best lenses for sports photography

 

What to bring:

Please bring your favorite camera, together with any lenses you want to shoot with (both wide angle and telephoto), plenty of charged battery packs, memory cards, a card reader, a monopod and a laptop computer to download and edit images. 

 

Skill level:

A firm understanding of your camera operations including basic knowledge on aperture, shutter speed and ISO is required. This workshop is for intermediate and advanced photographers.

Full tuition is due thirty (30) days before the workshop is scheduled to begin and is non-refundable after that date.

In the event of cancellation of the workshop all deposits and tuitions will be refunded or credited towards a future workshop.

Peter Read Miller has been photographing athletes, events and the sporting life for more than 40 years. He has worked as a staff and contract photographer for Sports Illustrated for more than 35 years and his images have appeared on over 100 Sports Illustrated covers. His editorial clients have included: Time, Life, People, Money, Playboy, Runner’s World, Newsweek, USA Weekend and The New York Times. In addition to covering nine Olympic Games and 38 Super Bowls, Peter has shot 14 NBA Finals. He has covered the Stanley Cup Finals, the World Series, the Kentucky Derby, the NCAA Basketball Final Four, and the Men’s and Women’s World Cup Soccer Finals. Peter teaches yearly sports photography workshops every spring in Denver, CO and fall in Atlanta, GA. He has also taught at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and The Rocky Mountain School of Photography. Peter has spoken at the Los Angeles Chapter of the Advertising Photographers of America, Photoshop World, Imaging USA, CES and PDN’s Photo Plus East. He has also lectured at numerous colleges, universities and professional photographic organizations.
