Yeager Airport: The Longer Road to Recovery from the Slide of 2015

In March 2015, the Runway Safety Area and Engineered Material Arresting System were destroyed when the reinforced soil slope failed at Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV. The result of the structural fill failure was a near vertical soil face in the remnant fill over a massive debris field extending over a road and creek. Cleanup consisted of moving over 400,000 cubic meters of debris and shortening the useable length of the runway. To restore safety features and normal operations, a new 122 meter-long retaining wall up to 25 meters high was designed and constructed. Wall construction included compacted soil backfill as well as geofoam backfill. This presentation will give an overview of the design and construction challenges posed by the site conditions, as well as those associated with bottom-up construction of an anchored soldier pile wall and the incorporation of Geofoam backfill. We will close with some performance data from the monitoring system that has been in place for more than two years.
