Suicide is a national public health concern that affects all Americans, including Veterans, their families, and their friends. The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has made suicide prevention its top clinical priority as Veterans are more likely to die by suicide when compared to non-Veteran US adults. Similarly, the Veteran suicide rate in NJ mirrors National data as Veterans in NJ are more likely to die by suicide compared to non-Veteran adults. The VA has implemented a 10-year National strategy to reduce suicide among Veterans and one element of that strategy is enhancing the screening and assessment for suicide risk among Veterans who utilize Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) services. Bradley Jacobs, LCSW, Suicide Prevention Coordinator VA NJHCS, will discuss the components of the VA’s “Risk ID” strategy, specifically focusing on the tool developed by the VA for suicide risk assessment. Learn about the components of this assessment tool, including risk stratification and mitigation, and how that may inform your practice in working directly with other Veterans and active duty service members.
