Will Announce on April 17th
SCC Mogollon Experience
Overnight Trip
Saturday/Sunday, June 8/9, 2019
Hosted by Mike and Donna Reagan
Spent some time in the cool breezes of Rim Country!
Our group of 15 cars will depart promptly at 9 AM from the Denny’s Restaurant in Fountain Hills, located on the SE corner of Shea Blvd and Saguaro Blvd. Be sure your gas tank is full.
We drive up the Beeline Hwy. (Route 87) into Payson where we will turn right onto Route 260. There will be a 15 minute rest stop at the Giant Gas Station (701 E. Hwy 260) before heading off to the Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery (3898 N. Tonto Creek Rd) where we will actually see how over 750,000 trout are raised each year for stocking in our lakes and streams. Even if you don’t like fish, what you will see and hear during our tour is very interesting. Plus, you will have the chance to actually feed them. Our tour includes a visit to their visitor and nature center for more graphic information about the process and history of breeding these fish in Arizona.
Then it’s off to the famous Red Onion Roadside Restaurant in Overgaard. The owners, Al and Diane, have built a huge following for their renowned burgers. While the menu has something for everyone, the Monster Burger with onion rings has earned recognition by AZ Highroads Magazine as being in the top 10 of burgers. The owners are also huge NASCAR fans and have decorated the place with lots of racing memorabilia.
After our lunch, we will head back west on Hwy 260 and exit at Woods Canyon Lake, Forest Road 105. After a short drive we will stop at a spectacular vista point where you can actually stand at the very edge of the Mogollon Rim and look straight down over 1000’. Also, you can see the entire lower ponderosa valley for miles in all directions. We will do a headcount before departing for the lake to make sure everyone is still with us!
As we drive into the lake parking area, you will see why this lake is known for its fantastic beauty. Park anywhere and then consider whether you want to hike around the lake, take a nature walk in the forest, rent a kayak for an hour, or even go fishing. You are free to spend as much time at the lake as you wish, but remember when leaving to turn right onto Hwy 260 to go back to Kohl’s Ranch Lodge to check in.
For those interested, we will have an informal cocktail party starting around 5:30, and please bring your own drinks, cups, and snacks. After the 7:00 dinner we can regroup for more social time if some desire.
In the morning, you can hike around the property or just sleep in a little late. Breakfast is available in the main lodge. Afterwards, you are free to head back to the valley on your own. But remember, GAS UP in PAYSON. The Circle K’s are top tier if that is your preference.
