The SHM Arizona Chapter will be hosting an in-person event on Wednesday, January 22nd at 6:00 p.m. MT. at Seasons 52 in Phoenix, AZ. Please join the chapter to meet and network with other hospitalists in your community and for an educational presentation titled "Capacity, Competency, and Guardianship: Oh My!" provided by Adrienne Jones-Adamczyk and Lexi White.
This presentation will look at ethical and legal issues with decision-making for patients including assessing patient capacity, reviewing surrogate hierarchies, and exploring the legal process for guardianship. This presentation will use example cases and will discuss them from both an ethical and a legal perspective.
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:
- Discuss the elements of capacity, as well as the difference between capacity and competence.
- Assess which surrogate decision-maker is appropriate to use given the legal jurisdiction a patient is in.
- Restate the obligations and limitations of surrogate decision makers.
- Describe the role of the physician in the guardianship court process.
