Craig Coopersmith, MD, FACS, FCCM
Professor of Surgery and Vice Chair of Research for Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine.
Dr. Coopersmith graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and also went to medical school at the same institution. He did his surgery residency at Washington University, taking an extra 3 ½ years to perform research with Dr. Jeffrey Gordon (now a member of the National Academy of Sciences). He then completed a surgical critical care fellowship at the same institution, and then joined faculty where he rose from assistant professor to full professor, while also directing the Surgical/Trauma ICU and acting as program director for the surgical critical care fellowship. Dr. Coopersmith was recruited to Emory in 2009 where he serves as the Director of the Surgical/Transplant ICU and as Associate Director of the Emory Critical Care Center. Dr. Coopersmith is currently the PI or co-PI on 3 R01s from the National Institutes of Health related to his work on the gut in sepsis and the immune response to sepsis. He is also the PI on a NIH-funded T32 training grant on critical care. Dr. Coopersmith is also co-chairs the research arm of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign and is past-president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the world’s largest multi-professional organization dedicated to critical care.
