People seeking care for Opioid Use Discorder (OUD) —a chronic disease that can lead to overdose, infectious diseases, and psychosocial hardships—should have access to best practices, which for OUD involves medication treatment. However, many social workers have biases about OUD, lack awareness that medication treatment for OUD is an evidence-based practice with much stronger support than behavioral or 12-step approaches, and as a result, share stigmatizing and pseudoscientific views in their professional role. This community conversation will review how these misunderstandings harm people seeking treatment, and ways social workers can lead the field forward.
