Spoon carving bliss in the Tassie botanical gardens

Imagine the satisfaction of scooping up a homemade lunch with a unique and beautiful wooden spoon made with your own hands.

You can do this, anyone can. All you need is a day of happy slowness at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens learning the traditional craft from an experienced spoonsmith. I'll show you how to safely use the simple tools and carve your own wooden cutlery while enjoying a unique sense of meditation and slowness to be found in whittling everyday essential objects. 

A day carving at a Spoonsmith workshop is an unhurried and mellow experience where you learn to use the tools of the trade in a safe and effective way. This workshop will guide you through the stages of axe work, knife work and hollowing out the bowl (that exciting part of the day when the spoon emerges). Everyone starts with a log of sustainably sourced native timber and ends up with a spoon or two!

The workshop will take place in the lovely Wombat One space.

Suitable for: Adults 16+. All skill levels.

Provided: All materials, tools and a protective apron. BYO lunch or buy nearby.
