Two day pre-fest kuksa making workshop with Alex Yerks

This two day Spoon Jam pre-fest session with Alex Yerks will find you immersed in making your own hand carved kuksa. This simple vessel will go with you on many of life's adventures and age beautifully over time.

The kuksa is an old-style wooden cup made to travel far and wide and be at the ready, whether the beverage of choice is water from a crystal creek, your favourite coffee, or even a splash of something stronger.

Over two days, you will be fully immersed in the world of green woodworking by using common tools like axes, adzes, gouges, hook tools, and, of course, the versatile sloyd knife to shape freshly harvested wood into a one-of-a-kind vessel.

By crafting a kuksa, which is more than a spoon but less than a bowl, you will engage in a wide array of techniques and tool usage that bridges the gap between spoon carving and bowl carving. This course will cover sourcing wood, carving, tool technique, safety, and tool maintenance.

Specialty tools will be available to borrow and you should plan to bring a carving axe, hook tool, and sloyd knife (although we can provide these if needed). The goal of this workshop is to gain confidence in yourself and the tools being used. You will build a relationship with each specific tool—the axe, adze, gouge, froe, and straight and hooked knives. This is the key to understanding the function of tool and timber.

We can end the two days with a celebratory drink from your own hand carved kuksa!

Both days will run from 10am - 4pm.

For people aged 16 and over.

This workshop does not include entry into Spoon Jam on 3 & 4 November. Pre-fest session ticket holders will be given first dibs on Spoon Jam tickets. We will contact pre-fest ticket holders with an email and booking link three days before Spoon Jam tickets open to everyone else.

As ticket sales from pre-jam workshops contribute to the costs of getting these amazing folks to Australia, the pre-Jam tickets are non-refundable, but they can be transferred to another person if required.

Full cancellation and liability policy.

Alexander Yerks, wood carver, photographer and singer songwriter lives deep in the forest near Woodstock in the Catskill Mountains, New York. Northeast Native, Alex was born and raised on a mountain in Upstate New York and grew up wandering around the surrounding woods. Alex quickly learned to conjure up things he needed - instead of hopping in the truck, and driving miles to buy things for the home. Brought up to rely on his natural surroundings, he instinctively works with the natural resources of the forest, utilizing the unique qualities of each tree, in his projects. Utensils and cups have always been the focus of his craft - creating functional and beautiful pieces with the capacity to enrich our lives and our homes.
