Leadership & the Rule of Benedict: A School for Servant-Leadership
In the Prologue to his Rule, St. Benedict writes “Therefore we must establish a school for the Lord’s service.” Gonzaga University’s School of Leadership Studies has always understood servant-leadership to be at the heart of its mission, and so this retreat for alumni of the Organizational Leadership, Communication and Leadership, and Doctoral programs at Gonzaga is focused on servant-leadership, an approach to working with others that we inherit not only from the work of St. Ignatius of Loyola but from that of St. Benedict as well.
A repeat of the Fall 2022 retreat, this five-day alumni retreat brings Dr. Jack Horsman back to Valyermo to assist Gonzaga alumni to have a generative dialogue about servant-leadership today. The topics included are:
- The Four Breath Presencing Practice: an integrating holistic practice.
- Humility: Assuming humility is the grounding principle of Servant-leader development, how does/might humility show up in your leadership practice?
- Harmony-Wisdom and Soft-listening: we will explore and experience soft-listening and dialogue about how to use it in your leadership practices.
- Theory U: we will use practices and exercises to experience aspects of the U journey to inform our understanding of Servant-leadership.
Readings as preparation for the retreat will be identified a few weeks before the retreat.
Presenters: Michael Carey, Obl.OSB, Ph.D., and Dr. Jack Horsman
