Street Data Student Agency Series: Toward a Pedagogy of Voice
This brand new, dynamic series will take place over five virtual sessions for over 16 hours of learning.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP SERIES
In the wake of the pandemic, how can we cultivate a deep sense of agency in our students? We must acknowledge our lingering fatigue, center our healing, and find our own agency in this politically divisive, teacher-undervaluing era. Many schools and districts are still organized around systems of compliance rather than agency. This mini-series will fuel you up with the tools and energy to make the shift! We begin by articulating the purpose of education before centering the story of one student at the margins as the catalyst for your radical dreaming. We tap into the Street Data model to design from the margins, ending with a concrete design for cultivating student agency and a pedagogy of voice. Join us for this dynamic, hands-on workshop series co-facilitated by Abby Benedetto and Shane Safir.
OUTCOMES
Participants will:
- Develop and practice communicating their purpose of education.
- Anchor their learning in the specificity and story of one student at the margins.
- Reflect on what it means to design schools and classrooms for student agency.
- Explore how to redesign assessment in service of student agency and liberation.
- Develop a plan to cultivate student agency and a pedagogy of voice.

Session 1: Thursday, October 12: 1:00-4:30 p.m. (Pacific Daylight Time) - What is the purpose of education?
Session 2: Tuesday, October 17: 1:00-4:30 pm (Pacific Daylight Time) - What does it mean to design for agency from the margins?
Session 3: Thursday, October 26: 1:00-4:30 p.m. (Pacific Daylight Time) - How can assessment build learner agency?
Session 4: Thursday, November 9: 1:00-4:30 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) - How do we cultivate a pedagogy of voice that builds learner agency?
Session 5: Thursday, November 16: 1:30-4:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) - How can we develop a public learning culture?
Please Note: The first 30 minutes of each session is designed as an optional “Reading Room” for folks to join the Zoom early and use that time to finish any pre-work/prep for the session. We will be present and available for any questions at that time! To maximize your learning, you will need to spend about an hour in between sessions on reading and assigned tasks.
WORKSHOP MATERIALS
- Please pre-purchase Street Data: A Next Generation Model for Equity, Pedagogy, and School Transformation (Corwin, 2021) and prepare to read Chapters 1, 5, 6, and 7.
- Please also download and read Dr. Jamila Dugan’s ASCD Educational Leadership magazine article on radical dreaming. (Jamila will be a guest presenter during the series.)
- Read the Getting Smart blog article on Revelatory Assessment or listen to the podcast episode. (Kelly Niccolls will be a guest presenter during the series.)
- The book, Street Data, is NOT included in the course pricing.
- As mentioned above, we will offer a Reading Room for the first 30 minutes of each session. This will be time to read, review, or prepare notes for the day’s learning.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Abby Benedetto has taken on designing and changing systems for the last two decades from a wide variety of roles and perspectives—honing her skills around deep listening, collaborative innovation, and equity-centered learning design. Abby is driven by the purpose of working to ensure that ALL young people (and adults) have access to the type of deeper learning they deserve so that they feel seen and valued, and develop the skills that they need to go out into the world and thrive. As 2020 unfolded and the world was newly turned upside down because of COVID-19, the persistent and inexcusable murders of unarmed Black men and women, forest fires raging around us, and clear threats to our democracy, Abby found herself heavy with so many questions of "what am I doing? what can I do?" Those questions led her to some new lenses of purpose and focus, specifically around supporting other white-identified folks to build an anti-racist practice, and develop tools to reduce the hold that white supremacy culture has on our system of public education.
Shane Safir has worked at every level of the education system, from the classroom to the boardroom, for over two decades. In 2003, after teaching in San Francisco and Oakland and organizing with the San Francisco Organizing Project to launch a new school, Safir became the founding principal of June Jordan School for Equity (JJSE), an innovative national model identified by leading scholar Linda Darling-Hammond as having “beaten the odds in supporting the success of low-income students of color.” Since 2008, Safir has provided leadership coaching, strategic planning support, and equity-centered professional learning for schools, districts, and organizations across the country and in Canada. She facilitates sought-after workshops on equity leadership, coaching, and facilitating adult learning among other areas. She writes frequently for Edutopia and ASCD’s Educational Leadership magazine and is the author of The Listening Leader: Creating the Conditions for Equitable School Transformation (Jossey-Bass: 2017). Shane's newest book, Street Data: A Next-Generation Model for Equity, Pedagogy, and School Transformation (Corwin: 2021), is out now.
ABOUT THE GUEST PRESENTERS
Dr. Jamila Dugan (she/her) is an author, leadership coach and researcher. She co-authored, with Shane Safir, the Corwin Press Best Seller, Street Data: A Next-Generation Model for Equity, Pedagogy, and School Transformation, focusing on culturally-rich education environments and transformative approaches to learning. She has served as a coach for teachers, led PhillyPLUS, a school leadership preparation program in Philadelphia, PA, and as a school leader, co-developed the first public mandarin immersion middle school in Oakland, CA. She is the founder of JD Learning Partners, specializing in equity-centered leadership development across the education and public service sectors. Jamila holds a doctorate in educational leadership for equity from the University of California, Berkeley; a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from George Mason University; and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Fresno State University. Jamila lives in San Diego, CA with her husband and two children.
Kelly Camak Niccolls is an educator, facilitator and perpetual learner. She currently serves as Director, School Leadership and Outcomes for Cheney Public Schools. Kelly started her teaching career in Southern California, spending eight years in secondary ELA classrooms. Before settling in to systems leadership, Kelly spent six years working for organizations supporting national education innovation work, coaching schools and systems across the nation to reimagine teaching and learning as New Tech Network schools and contracting with districts, schools and organizations in innovative learning design for Getting Smart Kelly has been a HS administrator and most recently, is serving in central office leadership. Kelly has been honored to be part of the Deep Learning Equity Fellows as a fellow and facilitator, and is a facilitator for the Center for Courage and Renewal. Kelly has an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from University of Washington; an MA in Sociology and a BA in English Literature from California State Universities. Kelly is driven by the relentless belief in the possibility of social justice in education systems. She focuses her education leadership to re-imagine structures for teaching and learning as tools for liberation. She advocates and facilitates collective voice and context for amplifying learning that seeks what can be for all participating in a learning community.
