Presentation Overview:

Bank Station is a London Underground station located in the heart of the City of London and is a key interchange served by five lines. The Bank Station Capacity Upgrade (BSCU) was completed for TfL by Dragados and Dr. Sauer & Partners with the aim of relieving heavy passenger congestion during peak hours for boarding, alighting and interchange. The conceptual design commenced in summer 2013 and the project fully delivered in May 2023. The capacity upgrade was composed of a new southbound platform tunnel and associated length of running tunnel for the Northern line, connecting passageways and openings into the existing station tunnels, including 3 tunnelled escalators.

Effective communication between the client and the design and construction teams helped to enable improvements in design and innovation on the multiple award-winning Bank Station Capacity Upgrade (BSCU) project, in London. A tunnel designer’s retrospective is presented by Dr. Ali Nasekhian (Design Manager) of Dr. Sauer & Partners.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Ali Nasekhian is a Senior Associate with Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP). He received his Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and Geotechnics from University of Tehran in 2003. In 2002, he joined DKP Geotechnical Consulting Engineers in Tehran where he gained experience in geotechnics by his involvement in several projects with a wide spectrum of geotechnical applications for 5 years. He has managed several ground engineering projects in Iran before he began his doctorate degree in 2007 in the field of Geotechnics and Tunnelling at Graz University of Technology in Austria. Concurrently he obtained his Professional NATM Engineering degree from Graz University of Technology and University of Leoben. He moved to the UK in 2011 to join the DSP design team delivering cutting edge FE modelling and geotechnical analysis for a series of complex tunnelling projects in London including Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project (BSCU) as well as the Farringdon Station on the Elizabeth line in London. Dr. Nasekhian was a structural lead in the BSCU project during conceptual and detailed design phases, leading the tunnel design and impact assessments of the BSCU works on the adjacent London Underground infrastructure. As the project moved into the construction phase, he became the design manager supporting the construction team for the design changes proposed to save on cost, programme and to improve safety.

He has published 28 papers in the field of geotechnics and tunnelling in international conferences and journals. His broad geotechnical knowledge and expertise has also supported DSP in delivering cost driven solutions for the UK infrastructure projects and worldwide.
