Organizational culture can breathe life into strategy by lifting an employee’s sense of purpose, engagement, and satisfaction. Left unattended however, it can feel suffocating, resulting in absenteeism, lower productivity, lawsuits, and even sabotage. Leading a healthy culture is particularly difficult in federal agencies that are subject to command and control structures, regulations that leave little room for creativity, assumed lifetime employment, and the uncertainty of election cycles, budget cuts, and furloughs. Federal agencies also have a very powerful but underutilized cultural advantage: a mission that supports society in a time when society needs it most.
The key to understanding and transforming workplace culture can be found in its definition. Culture is defined as the shared, subconscious expectations that drive behavior. Or more accurately, automatic behavior. This workshop pulls from the latest research in organizational psychology and 20 years of culture transformation work, to address problematic features of culture that have a stronghold in the federal government, including work-to-rule (it’s not my job) mentality, conflict avoidance, scapegoating, busy-work, and learned helplessness. This workshop will also address how these issues are further complicated by shifts in generational expectations and overreliance on advanced communication technologies.
Upon successful completion of this highly interactive one-day workshop, participants will be able to:
- Diagnose features of workplace culture that require transformation
- Teach others the basic culture transformation process
- Utilize tools for helping employees notice and correct unhelpful assumptions and behaviors
- Implement new meeting protocols known to improve morale in a digital age
