KAI-UWE BERGMANN, AIA, RIBA

Kai-Uwe Bergmann is a Partner at BIG who brings his expertise to proposals around the globe, including work in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Kai-Uwe heads up BIG’s business development which currently has the office working in 20 different countries as well as overseeing BIG’s Communications. Registered as an architect in the USA (eight states), and Canada (one province), Kai-Uwe most recently contributed to the resiliency plan BIG U to protect 10 miles of Manhattan’s coastline. He compliments his professional work through previous teaching assignments at University of Pennsylvania, University of Florida, IE University in Madrid, and his alma mater the University of Virginia. Kai-Uwe also sits on the Board of the Van Alen Institute, participates on numerous international juries and lectures globally on the works of BIG.

Kai-Uwe will present HOT TO COLD: Through the scorching heat of the Arabian Desert to the unforgiving chill of the Finnish tundra, HOT TO COLD takes visitors on a journey across the globe to explore the forces that shape our cities and buildings. Traveling from the hottest to the coldest parts of our planet, BIG explores how design solutions are shaped by their cultural and climatic contexts to unlock the immense possibilities of adaptive architecture. The central challenge is to mitigate the climatic extremes for hospitable human life, while finding solutions that can be both economically and environmentally profitable. HOT TO COLD is a search for a pragmatic utopia, shaped as the kind of world we wish to inhabit.

JOSH CHAIKEN, AIA

Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates

Josh Chaiken, a Principal at KPF, has played a key role in the design of a number of KPF’s most high-profile projects throughout the United States, Canada, and Asia. Since joining KPF in 1986, he has led the design of a range of hotels and mixed-use developments, high-rise office buildings, corporate headquarters, retail venues, residences, and academic/institutional facilities, such as the 101-story Shanghai World Financial Center, one of the world’s tallest buildings. Hosting a dynamic program including office, retail, a Park Hyatt Hotel, and public “Sky Walk” on the 100th floor, this iconic structure has been recognized with several prestigious design awards including the Society of American Registered Architects’ Design Award for Excellence (2009), the American Council of Engineering Companies National Engineering Excellence Awards Honor Award (2009), the MIPIM Asia Awards’ Participants’ Choice Award (2009), and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s Best Tall Building Worldwide Award (2008).  Mr. Chaiken also led the design of the Xintiandi Langham and Andaz hotels in Shangahi and the Grand Hyatt Tokyo at Roppongi Hills.  His recent design work includes Otemachi 1-6, a 1.9 million square foot mixed-use project in Tokyo that contains headquarters offices for Mizuo Bank and is topped by a 130-room Aman hotel.

Mr. Chaiken’s work in Canada includes the award-winning Ritz Carlton Hotel and residences in Toronto.  Also in Toronto, Mr. Chaiken designed the RBC Centre, a 41-story, 1.2-million-SF office building, the first LEED Gold Certified office building in Canada, and the Ernst & Young Tower at 100 Adelaide Street West, a million-square-foot tower located in the heart of Toronto’s downtown core, now under construction. He also led the design of the MNP Tower at 1021 West Hastings Street, a 32 story boutique office overlooking Vancouver’s Coal Harbor and the Deloitte Tower a 26 story office adjacent to Windsor Station in Montreal.

JENNIFER KEESMAAT

Chief Planner & Executive Director, City of Toronto

As Chief Planner for the City of Toronto, Jennifer is committed to creating places where people flourish.  Over the past decade Jennifer has been repeatedly recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and OPPI for her innovative work in Canadian municipalities.  Most recently, Jennifer was named as one of the most influential people in Toronto by Toronto Life magazine and one of the most powerful people in Canada by MacLeans Magazine.  

Her planning practice is characterized by an emphasis on collaborations across sectors, and broad engagement with municipal staff, councils, developers, business leaders, NGO's and residents associations.  Her priorities include implementing a divisional strategic plan, leading an Official Plan review process, refining public consultation to provide more access to city building conversations, a renewed focus on evidence based transit planning, midrise development on the City of Toronto's many avenues, and overseeing development review for over 4000 applications annually. 

Jennifer is the founder of Project Walk, which premiered its first short film in 2011, as an official selection at the TIFF.  In 2012 Jennifer debuted her first TED talk, Walk to School and in 2013 she delivered her second, Own Your City.  Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario (combined honors English and Philosophy) and has a Master in Environmental Studies (Politics and Planning) from York University.

JASON McLENNAN

McLennan Design; Living Building Institute

Considered one of the most influential individuals in the green building movement today and the recipient of the prestigious Buckminster Fuller Prize, Jason F. McLennan’s work has made a pivotal impact on the shape and direction of green building in the United States and Canada and he is a much sought after presenter and consultant on a wide variety of green building and sustainability topics around the world. McLennan serves as the CEO of the International Living Future Institute – a leading NGO that focuses on the transformation to a world that is socially just, culturally rich and ecologically restorative.

An Ashoka Fellow, Jason is the founder and creator of the Living Building Challenge, widely considered the world’s most progressive and stringent green building program. He is the author of five books; The Philosophy of Sustainable Design, The Dumb Architect’s Guide to Glazing Selection, The Ecological Engineer, Zugunruhe and Transformational Thought.

MARK REDDINGTON, FAIA

LMN received the 2016 Architecture Firm Award, the highest honor the American Institute of Architects bestows upon an architecture firm. This award transcends individual project accomplishments, recognizing one architectural practice every year for sustained design excellence and extraordinary contributions to the profession and broader society.  Mark Reddington, FAIA has been instrumental in establishing LMN as a leader in the design of public places with over 120 awards including national and international awards for architecture, urban design and sustainability.  

He leads projects in all market sectors including convention centers, performing arts, education and transportation and brings a strong focus on enhancing the public realm through design excellence. As a design partner of Seattle's LMN Architects, he has led the design for many prominent public projects which enrich the civic and cultural lives of cities and campuses throughout the US. From his designs for Benaroya Hall and Marion Oliver McCaw Hall among other significant spaces supporting the dramatic and musical arts, Seattle audiences have the benefit of his profound understanding of both the art and the experience of performance.

His inspiring and highly functional designs capture widespread acclaim from public and professional audiences. In his portfolio: performing arts centers, convention centers, and university buildings in cities including Minneapolis, Cleveland, Memphis, Dallas, Denver, and Seattle as well as current projects in Cincinnati and San Diego.  As design partner, Mark has led the development of LMN's design approach, which in turn has established the firm as a national leader in the design of public buildings, recipient of numerous awards and honors and widespread critical acclaim from not only architecture critics, but also urban design writers, music and arts experts, technical journals, accessibility advocates, broadcast media, and civic organizations. In December 2003, L'Arca Edizione released LMN Architects: Design in the Public Realm.

ILLYA AZAROFF, AIA

+lab architect PLLC

Azaroff's +LAB Architect PLLC is a studio built on trans-disciplinary collaboration. He is a recognized expert in Resilient planning, design and implementation. He is a subject matter expert advising ASPR on the Federal Disaster Recovery Framework, works with city and federal agencies on all aspects of resilience. He was awarded the 2014 Young Architects Award by the AIA for innovative practice and leadership. Innovation, invention and inquiry underpin his work, such as prototyping disaster relief shelters and rapid response systems.

DANIEL NALL, PE, FAIA, FASHRAE, LEED FELLOW, BEMP, HBDP

A widely recognized high performance design and sustainability professional, Mr. Nall is both a registered architect and registered professional engineer with close to four decades of industry experience and is a recognized expert at several emerging technologies for high performance green buildings

AWA Lighting Designers 

Abhay Wadhwa is an internationally acclaimed keynote speaker, educator and author of numerous advanced light engineering and cultural lighting articles, and has worked with the United Nations Foundation on projects that address issues that marginalize many of the world’s population.  He crafts a story using lighting design and technology to create moments of experience, that factor into the psyche and emotions of those who work, live or visit the spaces designed by AWA. While doing so, he is seeking innovative solutions that challenge convention while augmenting the integrity of the architects’ vision.

THOMAS V. VONIER, FAIA

American Institute of Architects 2016 First Vice President/2017 President

 Tom Vonier, FAIA, from AIA Continental Europe, was elected 2016 AIA First Vice President/2017 President at AIA Convention 2015 in Atlanta. Currently serving as 2014–2015 AIA Vice President, he is also the founder and past president of AIA Continental Europe from 1994 to 1995. He served on the AIA Board of Directors representing the AIA International Region from 2010 to 2012.

As an architect in private practice, Tom Vonier supports public and private clients with global industrial and business operations, focusing on design and security planning for facilities in high-threat locations. With a specialty in security planning and industrial operations design, his projects have included work in the former Soviet Union, East Asia, the Middle East, Africa, North America, and Europe.

A recent quote from Tom: "Our profession must have unity of purpose and enlarge its constituency. This new era demands fresh ideas and new approaches. We have begun to set new directions for AIA, putting members and components first. We are on a new course."

Bing Thom Architects

Join us as we celebrate the life of one of Canada’s most admired and accomplished architects. Born in Hong Kong and immigrating to Canada as a child, Bing received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of British Columbia and his Master of Architecture degree from the University of California at Berkeley. A student of the 60’s, Bing travelled Asia and helped pioneer one of the first academic programs in Ethnic Studies in North America during his time in Berkeley. He worked in the offices of Fumihiko Maki and Arthur Erickson before starting his own firm in 1982.

Bing’s commitment to using great architecture to improve the urban context and social condition has been recognized by a range of honors including the Order of Canada and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for outstanding contributions to architecture and community. Dedicated to helping the next generation of architects, Bing is a popular lecturer in Canada and abroad and is the privileged recipient of Honorary Degree of Laws from Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, as well as an honorary professorship from Tongji University in Shanghai. Most recently, Bing was the recipient of the 2011 RAIC Gold Medal, the highest honor given to a Canadian architect.

Bing was a friend of the AIA.  Be with us as we pay our respects to his legacy.

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada was founded in 1907 as The Architectural Institute of Canada—and two years later, upon affiliation with the Royal Institute of British Architects, “Royal” was added as a prefix.  The RAIC is the leading voice for excellence in the built environment in Canada, demonstrating how design enhances the quality of life, while addressing important issues of society through responsible architecture.  The RAIC’s mission is to promote excellence in the built environment and to advocate for responsible architecture.  It is the national voice for nearly 5,000 architects in Canada.
