Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, Ormonde Street, Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny, R95 Y5CX, Ireland.

Lead by Prof. Nicklaus E. Zimmermann, the two-day course will cover best practice approaches to utilising GBIF-mediated biodiversity data and species distribution modelling. Conducted though R, the focal areas covered will include effective data management, assessing data quality and quantifying bias, data visualisation, habitat suitability and distribution modelling.

Prof. Niklaus E. Zimmermann is Head of the Land Use Dynamic Research Unit of the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL and Adjunct Professor in Macroecology at the ETH Zurich. His research areas include vegetation ecology, vegetation dynamics, and plant species diversity at various spatial and temporal scales. In the past few years, he has focused on modelling biophysical constraints of species and community distribution along spatial (real) and theoretical gradients, and on modelling species competitive dynamics on large spatial scales. This research required the interaction of plant ecophysiology, ecological theory, biophysical ecology and involved mainly GIS-analyses, programming and statistics.

Prof. Zimmermann has authored 176 papers and since 2014 has been ranked by the Web of Science as one of the top 1% of highly cited researchers worldwide in Ecology.  Sections of the workshop will be based on his latest book published in 2017 by Cambridge University Press: Antoine Guisan, Wilfried Thuiller, Niklaus E. Zimmermann; Habitat Suitability and Distribution Models: With Applications in R.
