TypoWeek 2019
The annual week of workshops related to typography at Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw, New Media Arts Department (NeMA).
During the week Verena Gerlach and Martin Majoor will give a free lectures at Asia and Pacific Museum. (04.12.2019)

This year we will host workshops by Verena Gerlach, Aleksandra Twardokes and Martin Majoor. Please read the descriptions carefully:
1. Writting with pictures by Aleksandra Twardokes
The main task of this workshop will be creating two sets of signs for the wayfinding system. Each set should be characterized by different qualities:
1. Possibly neutral in a sense of cultural codes.
2. Based on local visual tradition.
The students will learn about the process of designing coherent set of symbols. They will also gain basic theoretical knowledge about the theory of signs and a concept of visual grammar.
Requirements: basic drawing tools (pencil, paper, fineliner etc.) computer with installed Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
3. (Typo)graphic spot on Warsaw by Verena Gerlach
A typographic silk screen poster design workshop.
Designing and printing a silkscreen poster for a self chosen spot/event/topic in/of Warsaw. This poster shall work as a visual identity for this spot/event/topic. This »place«, etc. can be a well known landmark as well as a hidden, personal treasure.
The students will design exclusive letter shapes (a logotype) for their topic. These letter shapes will be combined wit a key visual / images for the poster.
2.Designing a Sans in five days by Martin Majoor
Creating some characters (letters) on paper, without computer! Tools: Double pencil, eraser, markers and korektor on white paper

Verena Gerlach
1998, Verena Gerlach founded her studio for graphic design, type design and typography in Berlin. Since 2006, she has been working as a freelance book designer for art book publishers alike Hatje Cantz and Kerber Verlag. She started lecturing in type design, and typography in 2003, and she now gives lectures and workshops all over the globe. Beside designing corporate fonts for global companies, she also is working on the typographic production for international, contemporary artists. In 2013, Verena published her book “Karbid—From Lettering to Type Design”.

Aleksandra Twardokes
Aleksandra Twardokes is a graphic designer and researcher in the field of visual communication. She is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice on the Faculty of Design. Currently, she carries out doctoral studies on the University of Warsaw, in the Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies. Her PhD thesis is focused on the wayfinding system of Mexico City public transport.
In the scope of her interest is the theory of signs, theory of writing, systems of visual communication, the iconography of pre-Columbian Mexico. She is a member of the interdisciplinary research group “Sign and Symbol” on the The University of Warsaw. Co-author of the exhibition “Slowa nieulotne. Pismo w kulturach swiata” (“non-vanishing Words. Writing in the world cultures”) in the Museum of Asia and Pacific in Warsaw.
Martin Majoor
Martin Majoor is a Dutch type designer and book typographer. Around 1990 he designed the award-winning typeface family Scala and Scala Sans, nowadays seen as a ‘classic’ among the first digital typefaces.
In the following years, Majoor designed typefaces such as Telefont, Seria and Nexus. Questa, designed in collaboration with Jos Buivenga, ranked second in a list of the 50 most noteworthy font releases of 2014.? Majoor taught typography at several Schools of Fine Art and gave numerous lectures and workshops throughout the world. He wrote articles for magazines like Items, Page, 2+3D and Eye, as well as contributing to several books on typography.
